Project Need / Challenge: Branding for a Gin and Vodka product
Project Overview
The bottle needs to express the cultural vibrancy and excitement of Mamelodi.
When considering the identity of the Gin and Vodka brand, focus on how Mamelodi started with special attention to:
History
Displaying colour
Mamelodi translates to "Mother of Melodies"
The humming bird / Eagle should be the main aspect of the logo.
The Significance
The Significance of the Humming Bird. It represents the small things in life and their meaning. A hummingbird flying reminds us to enjoy life and simple pleasures. The hummingbird symbolic meaning is a positive one. Hummingbirds mean we must expect love, joy, and good luck.
The significance of the Eagle: The eagle is often a solar symbol, and can be linked to all sky gods. It signifies inspiration, release from bondage, victory, longevity, speed, pride, father and royalty; it is often an emblem for powerful nations.
Label Designs
Inspiration As a collective, we started with looking at existing Gin and Vodka branding. How they incorporated their styles and elements. We mostly took inspiration from brand's like Cape Fynbos Gin range, and Sugarbird. Brands that aren't limited when expressing colours, or fresh and vibrant elements
First Version
For more of a variety, we presented the clients with 3 designs. One of the version had everything they originally mentioned, and designed it according to the existing inspirations sent by the client. We offered them a version completely outside of their spectrum, but visually displayed a simple bottle design inspired by existing spirit brands.
The final design presented to them was an abstract breakdown on the humming bird that they were quite fond of, and loved instantly. Focusing on the deconstructed humming bird and bringing through colour and simple design
We organised focus groups with the resident of Mamelodi, and asked them to visually describe Mamelodi. The story they put together was experiencing the unique music, and free spirit that lingered
Client Feedback
The client was very happy with the designs presented to them, and was quite impressed by how we expressed the bird. Their only add on was to try and incorporate more of the elements they sent us for inspiration. After visually experiencing how busy the design can get by adding in all the elements, they settled for building on the abstract bird and pairing it with minimal elements.
