The Challenge
Exploring the unintended effects that hyper-sexualised culture within social media has on females between the age of 18-25, and how the culture has contributed to major depression with typical symptoms within women.
Aims and Objectives
This research project aims to examine the influence that hyper-sexualised popular
culture within social media. What impact, if any, it has on women—exploring the
unintended negative impact that hyper-sexualised content on social media has on their
mental health. Moreover, how media creates, defines, create, impact, and shape is the
public and private worlds of females.
How has social media progressed over time, and how has the progression of social
media contributed to depression within late adolescent females? Can the micro-moments
of hyper-sexualised content on social media cause a macro problem within
the mental stability of late adolescent women? How are both “hyper-sexualisation” and
“media identified, delimited and understood?

2011 – 2020 we’ve seen a massive increase in online content such as advertisements,
fashion, photography, design or content influencers. We’ve also seen the introduction of
new media such as fan favourite’s like Snapchat or Tik Tok. Due to the constant stream
of content throughout social media, as human’s we’re exposed daily to thousands of
posts that may come across as unfavourable, suggestible or encouraging.
Some of the content we’re exposed to is highly sexualised, and not applicable. Existing
research has shown the negative impact social media can have on both genders.
People of all age’s but has not been a focused study within South Africa, or how over it
could negatively impact the mental development within young women. This study will
research the impact and examine the effects that hyper-sexualised content on social
media can potentially affect major depression with atypical symptoms within late
adolescent women. Furthermore, once examined, and further researched and
discussed, we’ll hopefully be able to indicate the potential impacts of a broader
conversation on the topic and possible indications of a sustainable solution..

Safe Social
Curated feed for your social need

Safe Social is designed as a plug-in that works with all the existing social media applications such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tik Tok already on your mobile or laptop device. A plug-in is an added software component that adds a specific feature to an already available program. If the platform accepts or supports the plug-in, it allows customization within the program. (“What is a Plug-in?” 2020).

Curated Feed for your Social Need

This added software feature customizes a program based on personal preference, rather than changing up a social media platform dynamic completely. Instead of creating an application that competes with strong competitors such as Instagram or Facebook, this plug-in will add strength to an already successful platform. This platform has been designed according to the needs of the targeted audience.
With the launch of Safe Social, the plug-in will have a separate set of options according to the content provided by the social media platform. Instead of viewing likes, followers and comments, they could view the application – such as Instagram – for its funny or cute content, like a goat best friending a dog.
The plug-in would be created for the individual’s that experience minor to major depression with or without atypical symptoms. There’s full control when operating the application, all according to the needs of the individual at that moment. Unless the individual experiencing depression feels the need to download or launch the app, the app will be inactive until they feel like there’s a need for its service. It’s a product and service that curate’s social media feed according to the individual’s need and preference.
